– updated 22 August 2012

I am born and bred in Penang, Malaysia. I graduated from Universiti Malaya with a bachelor of computer science and have completed the “Insights into Politics and Policy in Asia for Global Leaders” programme at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore.

I was formerly a local government councillor of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council, one of the largest municipalities in Malaysia at over 740 km sq and 800,000 residents.

In May 2013, I was elected the Member of Parliament for Bukit Mertajam in the 13th Malaysian General Election. My party, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) is a partner in the main Malaysian federal Opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat (People’s Pact). The DAP and its partners form the governing coalition in the state of Penang, Selangor and Kelantan.

Since July 2011, I am also part of the Penang Institute, a premier policy think tank in Penang and Malaysia.

I was the former Executive Secretary of the Network of Social Democracy in Asia (SocDem Asia).

I have written for periodicals and publications such as the Penang Monthly (formerly Penang Economic Monthly), Malaysiakini, the Malaysian Insider, and Journal on Social Democracy in Asia. My first book, “The Audacity to Think: An Invitation to Rethink Politics” was published in June of 2012.

In March 2012, I was named a Young Global Leader by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum; an ss_campaign_betikstadium2honour I share with fellow Malaysian, my friend Nurul Izzah Anwar MP.

In 2013, I was involved in the preparation of the 10-year strategic routemap for the state.
