PRESS: Penang to “contribute” 10,000 km to support “Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas” campaign

171112 | Bukit Mertajam

The #BetterPenang runners will run this Sunday at the Penang Bridge International Marathon in solidarity with the Himpunan Hijau leader Wong Tack and his group of activists who are walking 300km from Kuantan to Parliament in protest of the operation of Lynas Advanced Materials Plant in Gebeng. The Himpunan Hijau group started walking from Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan on 13 November and is expected to arrive at Parliament on 26 November.

We will also print 1,000 stickers to be distributed to runners by our volunteers at the start of the Penang Bridge International Marathon. The 1,000 runners will run a minimum of 10km to support the efforts by Himpunan Hijau to “Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas!”. Thus, on 18 November 2012, Penang will “contribute” at least of 10,000 km to Wong Tack and his group in their 300km walk.

#BetterPenang calls upon Members of Parliament from both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional parties as well as the Federal Government to listen to the voice of the people and protect Malaysians from environmental destruction. We echo the demands of the people of Kuantan and Malaysians in general to revoke the temporary operating license (TOL) to Lynas Corporation from Australia until a permanent and safe solution can be guaranteed for the radiation waste generated. Malaysians must not be made experimental lab mouse because up to now, no rare earth plant in the world has yet to provide a sustainable solution to the pollution and hazardous waste in rare-earth processing.

#BetterPenang is a group of Penangites and people who love Penang, coming together to make Penang a global, sustainable and liveable city of the future. Our first project is a free mobile app which links up with MPSP and MPPP Watch to provide a better, more transparent and user-friendly local council complaint platform.
