PRESS: PM made Penang BN look like a big joke for breaking their election promise even before the election

My press statement at the launch of DAP Bukit Mertajam “Return the Port to Penang” signature campaign:

230612 | Bukit Mertajam

We want to point out three (3) misleading statements by Barisan Nasional, in particular Penang BN and ask them three (3) questions:

22 April – Teng Chang Yeow appointed Penang BN Chief

1st misleading statement
14 May – The Star reported Teng Chang Yeow as promising an alternative blueprint for Penang’s future development, the main point includes restoring Penang as free port. Teng also said that PM Najib was “positive and ready to look into it”. (The Star, 15 May 2012)

2nd misleading statement
28 May – Penang BN political committee (Team B of Penang BN) announced instead of a free port, it will be a custom, inspection and quaranrine (CIQ) complex. Announcement was made by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) chairman Dr. Hilmy Yahya (Bernama, 28 May 2012)

3rd misleading statement
11 June – Teng Hock Nan came out to clarify there is no Team A and Team B, and CIQ is part of the freeport plan (Malaysiakini, 12 June 2012)

13 June – Prime Minister and Finance Minister Najib Tun Razak in answering a Parliamentary question from Liew Chin Tong, Bukit Bendera MP said, among others: “Memandangkan Pulau Pinang kini telahpun mempunyai beberapa zon bebas…dan konsep pelabuhan bebas tidak lagi wujud, isu memberi status perlabuhan bebas kepada Pulau Pinang tidak lagi berbangkit”

3 questions:
1) Why did BN mislead Penangites not once but THREE (3) times into thinking we will get a free port if we vote them?

2) Why did the Prime Minister reject Penang Government’s offer in December 2010 to bid for taking over Penang port?

3) Why was there no open tender and no consultation with the state government on such crucial issue as the privatisation of the port which may affect the economy of the state drastically?

Summary
The whole of Penang BN leadership should quit their positions because their first mega manifesto is already rejected by the Prime Minister, making them unable to face the Penang voters. The Prime Minister has made Penang BN look like a big joke because for the first time, an election promise is broken even before the election. They should now join hands with DAP Penang and the people of Penang to demand for the return of the Penang Port to the Penang people and stop the privatisation project which may be aimed at undermining the status of the Penang Port.
