PRESS: PM and male MPs should condemn Ibrahim Ali for denigrating women in Parliament, yet again

Press Statement by Steven Sim Chee Keong

I refer to report in Malaysiakini (http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/160879) on the statement by Ibrahim Ali, MP for Pasir Mas in Parliament blaming women for extramarital affairs of their husbands.

Ibrahim Ali seems to be competing with other UMNO MPs to outdo each other in being the most sexist in the Parliament. This is a total disappointment and does not represent the views of men in general.

Previously, Ibrahim Ali has said that women have very strong sexual urges, which caused men to marry many wives. And now he claimed that it was because women failing to satisfy the urges of their husbands that the men commit adultery. It is appalling that Ibrahim Ali seemed to squarely put the blame of social ills and domestic problems on women and sex.

Ibrahim Ali’s total disrespect for women only demonstrates his narrow, exclusive and xenophobic worldview, not least reflected through his involvement in the ultra-right wing group Perkasa.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak should take immediate actions against sexist male MPs in Parliament to reflect his 1Malaysia stance. If 1Malaysia is inclusive, it must go beyond racial unity and deal with the gender discriminatory culture in Malaysia, especially when involving the Government. Yet time and time again, we see that the Prime Minister allowed his backbenchers from UMNO to continue to humiliate and denigrate women even in the noble hall of the Parliament.

I also call on all MPs especially male MPs from Barisan Nasional to rise up to the occasion and show their commitment to gender equality by condemning Ibrahim Ali’s statement and also any such statements from our Parliamentarians.

Malaysian men against gender discrimination!
